This means research conducted at sites under the control of PHI; involving participants, data accessed through PHI. i.e. applies to research that's conducted within PHI by PHI Students and Staff (including technical and support staff).

PHI invests in two research types:

- Public health research and health system research. Public health researches aim to evaluate public health interventions, providing new knowledge on the benefits, costs, acceptability and wider impacts of multi-sectoral interventions intended to improve the health of the public and reduce inequalities in health.
- Health system research focuses on common health system functions such as stewardship, financing, resource inputs and delivery of services. It is not research that focuses on the discovery or development of new interventions to improve health.

Research policy vision:

The PHI will be a center of excellence through high quality public health and health system research in Sudan and beyond.

Research policy mission:

- To support priority research agenda at the national and global level.
- To initiate, participate, support and generate high quality researches.
- To build capacity of health system\workers and health partners in research.
- To guide and support policy reform through generating evidence.
- To facilitate evidence translation into actions.

Research Policy Values :

In order to fulfill PHI vision and mission, the following values and principles will guide the research:

- We will be accountable as researchers and as members in this community for conducting high quality researches following the international standards and guidelines.
- We seek to be leaders in shared decision-making throughout the whole process of research prioritization, planning, implementation and dissemination.

We will conduct the researches according to international standards of ethics in research.

- We will engage with communities involved in our research projects and establish a positive relationship with them.
- We will tailor our research projects to meet the needs and satisfy the expectations of our community.

- We will inform the policy on inequalities to access to health services and resources and whether health needs of the entire population and of vulnerable groups are met.
- We will ensure inclusive structures and fair distribution of researches.
- We will guarantee a transparent design, conduct, analysis and dissemination of research results.

- We will enhance collaboration with research institutions across disciplines.
- We will deliver projects in partnership with clients
- We will offer tailored options of projects management and stewardship.
